What the Disability Confident Scheme means:

  • It helps employers commit to attracting, recruiting and retaining people with disabilities
  • And it ensures that people with disabilities have the opportunities to fulfil their potential.

The scheme has 3 levels and BCP Council has achieved Disability Confident Employer (Level 2).

The council has achieved this because we:

  • ensure our recruitment process is inclusive and accessible
  • communicate and promote vacancies
  • support employees to stay in work when they develop a disability or long-term health condition.

We offer an interview to any applicant who declares they have a disability on the application form and who meets the minimum criteria for the position.

We are keen to make our interviews accessible. Let us know on your job application if you have a disability and need any reasonable adjustments in order to attend and we will do our best to make these possible.

This could include offering:

  • car parking space
  • an accessible interview room
  • a virtual interview
  • more time to complete an exercise, assessment or respond to a question
  • arranging for assistance with communication (this may include a British sign language interpreter)
  • facilities to be accompanied by a carer, assistant or other person.

If you are offered a position with the council, it may be necessary to carry out a medical assessment with our Occupational Health provider. The medical assessment will allow us to seek advice on what reasonable adjustments may be required to enable you to perform the role you have been selected for.

We are committed to working with you to put in place reasonable adjustments required where possible. Your input is important to inform us about what works for you so we can agree mutually beneficial changes where appropriate. We can also assist where necessary with additional support through a Workplace Needs Assessment and funding if needed from  Access to Work.

We are dedicated to ensuring there will be no discrimination against any job applicant or employee, either directly or indirectly, on grounds of disability. This commitment extends across your employment, including training, working conditions, treatment at work, promotion or dismissal.
