Job Introduction

The pay range for this role will be £33,699 to £39,152 (pro rata for part time colleagues)

What is the role like?

As an Assistant Highways Engineer, you will provide specialist technical support, advice, and coordination in the design, implementation, and monitoring of highway engineering and construction schemes. You will help ensure projects and services are delivered safely, legally, and in alignment with Council strategies and wider objectives.

The role involves preparing technical drawings, reports, specifications, and designs, as well as conducting surveys and analysing data to support the development of improvement schemes. You will liaise with contractors, consultants, Members, the public and external agencies, often acting as a key point of contact on technical enquiries.

Working closely with project managers and senior engineers, you will organise and supervise minor highways and engineering projects, ensuring quality, cost, and time standards are met. You’ll also support the management of asset data and contribute to service improvements through your professional development.

 

What will you be doing?

  • Brief, organise, and supervise the delivery of traffic, transportation, minor highways, and engineering schemes to meet cost, quality, and time requirements.
  • Coordinate and influence the work of graduates/technicians, consultants, and contractors, ensuring work is delivered on time and to required standards.
  • Handle enquiries from Members, the public, and contractors, including attending meetings and public consultation events.
  • Work with external bodies and agencies to ensure projects are aligned with joint objectives.
  • Prepare drawings, reports, briefs, specifications, contract documents, and designs for highways and engineering-related schemes.
  • Undertake surveys and analyse data to identify trends, support decision making, and develop recommendations for future schemes.
  • Provide technical advice and evaluation on proposed projects, including commissioning audits where required.
  • Maintain data and asset information to support project development and departmental record-keeping.
  • Support continuous service improvement through personal training and development.

What do you need?

  • Diploma or Degree in an engineering or traffic/transportation discipline.
  • Knowledge of regulations, legislation, and processes relating to highways.
  • Knowledge of contract and project management techniques, including cost and quality control.
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and safety legislation and its application to engineering, construction, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge and experience using design and technical software such as AutoCAD, GIS, databases, spreadsheets, and discipline‑specific tools.
  • Experience developing highways/traffic/transportation schemes or engineering design.
  • Ability to supervise and direct work of others including contractors and consultants.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to travel between sites (public transport, or valid UK driving licence).
  • Ability to work from our central offices and project site offices a minimum two days a week
  • Ability to work occasional nights and infrequent weekends.
