English Tutor - Variable Hours
Skills & Learning - Adult Community Education, is an Ofsted rated ‘Good’ provider of learning and development across Bournemouth, Christchurch, Dorset and Poole. We are looking for a new tutor to support the delivery of our English provision. This post is ideal for someone looking for a new opportunity, possibly adding to their existing teaching portfolio.
- We welcome applications from suitably qualified and dynamic tutors with expertise in teaching English. We are also interested in hearing from tutors who have experience working with individuals with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND). You will plan and deliver learning to motivate and challenge each learner, using a variety of activities and resources relevant to the programme, considering learners’ needs, interests and abilities.
- You will support learners to make good progress by establishing their starting points, using this information to agree and record targets and goals, and in the creative planning of resources and sessions.
- You will assess learner progress regularly, give frequent, constructive and encouraging verbal and written feedback, and maintain records of assessment and progress to ensure learners are on track to achieve within expected timescales and apply intervention action where necessary.

We are looking for tutors to teach the following course:
Thursday afternoon 1pm – 4pm Entry Level 3 – Level 2 at Poole Adult Learning Centre.

Role Purpose
To support learners to identify and achieve their personal learning goals by providing a high quality, enjoyable learning experience.
Teaching, supporting and assessing learners, course management, communication, registration of learners for exams and own continuing professional development.
Main Responsibilities
As an English functional skills and literacy tutor at Skills & Learning, you will develop, plan and deliver new courses and workshops for our adult learners, fostering creative approaches that take the focus off ‘school classes’ and instead explore literacy topics in a practical way relevant to everyday life and work. You will be expected to create schemes of work and lesson plans, identify and create high quality teaching and learning resources. You will support learners to achieve their English goals and make good progress.
The Ideal Candidate
We are seeking a qualified English tutor to deliver a range of part-time accredited and non-accredited classes at our learning centres and online. Teaching assignments will include daytimes, weekends and evenings so flexibility is essential.
The successful candidate will join a teaching and learning team of some 200 staff. Most of the team are part-time and report to, and are supported by, a designate Area Programme Manager
We use MS Teams to deliver online and hybrid teaching as well as in day-to-day communications with staff.
Essential requirements for applicants are:
- A teaching qualification e.g., Award, Certificate or Diploma in Education and Training or equivalent
- A level 3 or higher qualification in English
- Level 2 English and maths qualifications e.g., GCSE at Grade C or 4 or equivalent
- At least 2 years’ experience of teaching or training
- Experience of using MS Teams
For functional skills delivery, we would expect successful candidates to have a Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training or equivalent.
Tutors are expected to adhere to the Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers developed by the Education and Training Foundation.
