Highcliffe Castle is a magnificent Grade 1 listed building located on the south coast. The Castle suffered two severe fires in the 1960s, following this time, the Castle started a ten-phase restoration plan in the early 1990s to partially restore this magnificent building. Today the Castle is owned and operated by BCP Council and this post will be funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of Phase Seven of the restoration project.
This is the perfect role for someone who has extensive experience in supporting volunteers. The Castle is a busy heritage site which is open Sunday - Thursdays to welcome visitors and then the team hold weddings on Fridays and Saturdays. The Castle volunteers assist with most areas of the Castle’s business. You will have excellent organisational skills as you will be responsible for overseeing their rotas through the online volunteer management system Better Impact.
The current volunteer team at the Castle is currently sitting at 90+ volunteers and you will need to be used to working with large groups such as this. We are always looking to progress the volunteer roles and responsibilities and you will be involved in actively promoting our volunteer opportunities in the wider community in person or virtually. To assist with volunteer engagement a strong working knowledge of social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook are essential and leading regular volunteer meetings and collating newsletters will be part of the effective communication involved in this role.
Our volunteers are a brilliant group of individuals who require training and induction like all new starters and you will be the main lead on this, you will be able to liaise with other team members to ensure each volunteer has the appropriate amount of guidance and support, once they have completed their initial training.
This is an exciting time to be involved with the Lottery Heritage Fund project at the Castle and alongside the Visitor Engagement and Experience Officer, you will play an active role in the delivery of the objectives set out in the LHF activity plan.

As a result of the creation of BCP Council in 2019, we are working on simplifying our terms and conditions of service and will be creating a single pay structure which all of our employees will move on to. It is important to us that we offer benefits that our colleagues value as part of their total employment package and we are reviewing these to make sure we have it right. We’re hoping to implement these changes in 2022 and all colleagues joining us will be included in these changes.
