Level 6 Officer - Technical Specialist (Benefits & Welfare - Assessment) - 24 hours per week

Job Introduction

From 1 December 2025, our refreshed Pay and Reward package comes into effect, bringing a new approach to how we recognise and reward roles across the Council. This means the salary for this role will be changing. 

The pay range for this role will be £33,699 - £39,152 p.a. (pro rata for part time colleagues) from 1 December 2025.

Role Purpose

We have an exciting opportunity for a Technical Specialist to join a Benefits Assessment Team at BCP Council. The main purpose is to deal with complex issues and provide advice and guidance to staff in relation to Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support. 

 Main Responsibilities

To process complex cases accurately and efficiently.

To process cases in specialist areas of work including VEP Alerts, Housing Benefit Matching Service referrals, and Full Case Reviews. 

To assist in team training and support.

To be the first point of contact for the resolution of problems and issues, liaise with the team manager and escalate issues and concerns which may have an impact upon service standards and delivery. 

 The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for an individual with excellent technical knowledge of the Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support legislation, who can deliver training, can deal with complex claims and customer queries, has an eye for detail, and has strong commitment to the delivery of professional customer service.

Candidates must have:

  • Good interpersonal, communication, numeracy, and literacy skills
  • The ability to work with a wide range of people
  • The ability to support, train and empower staff
  • A flexible approach to change and working practices
  • The ability to use data to inform the decision-making process in line with procedures and legislative requirements.
