We’re looking forward to welcoming new colleagues under this refreshed framework of pay, terms, and conditions. Senior Seafront Ranger

Seafront Operations | Permanent | Full time

Lead, deliver and protect one of the UK’s most iconic coastlines

As Senior Seafront Ranger, you will be responsible for the day‑to‑day leadership and operational delivery of services across Bournemouth and Poole’s seafront. You will balance strategic planning and office‑based work with hands‑on, front‑line leadership on the beach, often in demanding, fast‑moving and highly public environments.

This role suits someone who thrives under pressure, takes pride in visible leadership, and has the resilience to manage competing demands—especially during peak visitor seasons.

What you’ll be doing

You will lead the Seafront Rangers and seasonal teams to ensure the seafront is safe, welcoming, operationally sound and commercially effective. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and motivating operational teams working across the seafront, including staffing, recruitment, development, rotas and performance management
  • Being a visible on‑site presence, supporting staff, responding to incidents, managing conflict and dealing directly with members of the public
  • Overseeing health & safety compliance, risk management and safe systems of work in a dynamic outdoor environment
  • Managing and maintaining a wide range of seafront facilities and assets, ensuring standards are upheld at all times
  • Balancing office‑based responsibilities such as reporting, project planning, performance monitoring, procurement and stakeholder engagement
  • Managing budgets and resources, ensuring value for money while maintaining service standards
  • Leading and delivering projects and service improvements, often alongside live operations
  • Acting as a key point of contact for emergency services, partners, contractors and internal colleagues
  • Providing 24/7 duty management cover on a rota basis, including weekends, bank holidays and major events

The reality of the role (and why that matters)

This is a seasonal, public‑facing service operating in all weathers, with intense demand during peak summer months and major festivals. You should expect:

  • Long days during summer with limited flexibility for annual leave in peak periods
  • A mix of reactive issue‑solving and planned project work
  • Difficult conversations, challenging situations and high public expectations
  • A requirement to switch quickly between strategic decision‑making and hands‑on operational support
  • A role that is physically demanding at times, not just mentally demanding

We want candidates to understand this upfront—because those who succeed here want the challenge, not despite it but because of it.

Who we’re looking for

You will be suited to this role if you bring:

  • Proven leadership experience in an operational, customer‑facing environment
  • A resilient, can‑do approach, remaining calm and effective under pressure
  • Strong communication skills, with the confidence to lead teams, manage stakeholders and deal with the public
  • Experience of budget management, resource planning and performance control
  • A high level of attention to detail, especially around safety, compliance and service standards
  • Demonstrated experience of project delivery alongside day‑to‑day operations
  • The motivation to continuously improve services while supporting and developing your team
  • Experience in seasonal, tourism, leisure, outdoor or visitor‑focused environments will be particularly valuable.

Working arrangements

  • This role requires both office‑based work and regular on‑site operational presence on the seafront
  • You must be willing to work 5 days out of 7, including weekends and bank holidays
  • Annualised hours apply, with longer hours during peak periods and time off in lieu during quieter months
  • A full UK driving licence is required

Why apply?

If you are looking for a role that is visible, challenging and genuinely impactful, where leadership is tested daily and success is shared with a committed operational team, this is a rare opportunity to take on something truly distinctive.

This role isn’t for everyone — but for the right person, it is career‑defining.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic DBS check and vetting.

Applicants must have a full and valid driving licence. Please do not apply if you do not have the required licence.

Interviews will be held on Thursday 14th May only. They will be in person at BCP Council Civic Offices, Bournemouth BH2 6DY.

Please note, this role is not eligible for visa sponsorship and we can only consider applicants with existing right to work in the UK
