Portage officer - 30 hours per week

Job Introduction

Role Purpose

BCP Portage Service is a small, dedicated team working with children aged 0-3 years with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) and their families.  Each child and family is placed at the centre of everything we do.  We are passionate about working in partnership with parents/carers and other professionals.  It is the positive impact the service has which makes this area of work so rewarding.

Main Responsibilities

You will support and empower parents/carers of children with SEND to increase their new knowledge, skills and confidence so they can learn, play, participate and be included in their community.   This includes: 

  • One to one work with children and families via Portage home visiting
  • Face to face group work with children and families via Portage Stay and Play groups
  • Video sessions with individual or small groups of children
  • Creating a holistic profile and play and learning plan for each child
  • Modelling key play, learning and communication strategies for parents/carers to implement at home
  • Facilitating successful transitions to an early years provider or school placement 
  • Creating reports to support further assessment (e.g. diagnostic pathway, Education, Health, Care Needs Assessment)

You will work alongside other Portage officers and in partnership with wider colleagues across Education, Health, Social Care/Early Help and the Voluntary sector.  The work is fun and varied, with no two days the same.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a skilled and knowledgeable early years practitioner with experience of working with young children with SEND. You must be able to establish positive relationships quickly and be able to work sensitively. You need to possess a good understanding of child development and how children learn.
