Job Title:                    School Appeals Clerk

Place of work:         Appeals will be held in our Trust schools within the Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch (BCP) area

Accountable to:        Head of Governance 

Hours:                        On a casual basis       

Remuneration:          £17.59 per hour

Start Date:                  As soon as possible

Closing Date:            Friday 12 April 2024

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

We are looking to form a pool of experienced school appeals clerks to provide high-quality legal and administrative support for our school appeal hearings.  

Ideally, we are looking for clerks who are experienced in this role with up-to-date training. However, training will be considered for the right candidates.    

Appeal hearings will be held during the day, face-to-face, in schools in-and-around the Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch (BCP) area. Panels can sit throughout the year, although the busiest period is between June and July. In exceptional circumstances they may be conducted online.  

TASKS AND DUTIES

  • Providing advice and guidance to Panel to enable it to carry out its judicial function.
  • Providing independent and impartial advice to all parties on the appeals process and admissions law when required.
  • Keeping an accurate record of the proceedings and sending written notification of the Panel’s decision.
  • Alongside Trust staff, assisting with the co-ordination of the annual cycle of school appeals.
  • Supporting the recruitment, training, and development of Panel Members. 

WE ARE SEEKING A PROFESSIONAL INDIVIDUAL WHO HAS: 

  • The ability to give good, sound, pragmatic, concise and clear advice to Panel Members at hearings and to other relevant parties enquiring about the appeal process.
  • Experience of clerking appeal hearings and ensuring they comply with legislative requirements, in accordance with government guidance.
  • Experience of working in an administrative environment, ideally working within legal frameworks.
  • Experience in minuting meetings, preferably in a local authority or school environment, and can produce clear and well-structured written work, including reports, letters and notes.
  • Excellent communications skills and attention to detail.
  • The ability to deal with sensitive issues in a tactful and confident manner.
