Waste Management Officer - 6 month contract (2 posts)

Job Introduction

Role Purpose

We’re looking for two Waste Management Officers to bring expertise and innovation to our Strategic Waste Team. In April 2026, BCP Council will launch food waste collection services for households in Poole as well as residents living in flats. This role will be fundamental to the successful delivery of the new service roll-out and a fantastic opportunity to make a real impact on how our communities manage waste safely and sustainably.

Main Responsibilities

What you’ll do

  • Contribute to the delivery and implementation of food waste collections from April 2026
  • Work collaboratively with communities, contractors and other stakeholders to provide advice and guidance that will deliver environmental improvements.
  • Support our contractor with container distribution to households from January to March 2026
  • Talk to members of the public, landlords and businesses to identify and overcome problems with the new service
  • Manage resident’s emails and social media enquiries.
  • Implement waste reduction and awareness campaigns to divert food waste and recycling from the rubbish bins
  • Oversee contracts, analyse data, and ensure compliance with legislation and council priorities.
  • Monitoring quality and performance of waste services to support improvements

The Ideal Candidate

What we’re looking for

  • Degree or equivalent experience in an environmental discipline (e.g., waste management, environmental science).
  • Proven experience in strategic waste management or similar projects.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of waste disposal, waste technology, and environmental policy.
  • Ability to travel across the BCP area and work flexibly, including occasional evenings/weekends.

You will play an active role in a multi-skilled and motivated team, and there will be plenty of opportunities to develop your skills, progress your career and contribute to the direction of the service as a whole. The role offers a mixture of homeworking and utilising offices at our waste sites or Council buildings. Positions are currently funded until June 2026.

Whatever stage of your career we welcome your application. For an informal discussion please contact: Georgina Fry, Waste Strategy & Resources Manager on 01202 126219 (georgina.fry@bcpcouncil.gov.uk) or Sarah Speakman-Jones on 01202 093347 (sarah.speakman-jones@bcpcouncil.gov.uk).
